Bungie Hit With Major Layoffs Impacting "Most of the Destiny Team" and More

Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed major layoffs at Bungie, affecting most of the Destiny team, some Marathon developers, and supporting SIE teams, following Destiny 2’s final live-service content update.

Bungie Rumored Layoffs

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed a major round of layoffs at Bungie, affecting a significant number of employees across the studio and some supporting PlayStation teams.

In an internal email published publicly by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hermen Hulst, CEO of SIE’s Studio Business Group, said the company has decided to reduce Bungie’s workforce following a review of the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within Sony’s broader portfolio strategy.

"We have made the decision to reduce Bungie’s workforce, affecting a significant number of employees, including most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members. There are also reductions across SIE teams that support Bungie’s operations. Those impacted at Bungie and within SIE are being informed today."

The announcement follows Bungie’s recent move away from Destiny 2 as an active live-service project. Hulst referenced the studio’s recent Destiny 2 update, saying Bungie has begun “a new journey” after the release of the game’s final live-service content update. He also praised Destiny’s decade-long impact, saying the franchise has left a lasting mark on players and the wider industry.

This is all following months and years of dwindling players and decreased interest in the game as a whole. These layoffs have been rumored for weeks.

Bungie also issued a statement of their own:

The layoffs mark another difficult moment for Bungie after several years of turbulence around Destiny 2, Marathon, and Sony’s broader live-service ambitions. Sony acquired Bungie in 2022, positioning the studio as a major part of PlayStation’s push into live-service development. Since then, Bungie has faced multiple rounds of cuts and internal restructuring as Destiny 2’s long-term performance and player engagement became a growing concern.

Hopefully, this is not the beginning of the end for the studio. They've made a tremendous impact on the industry across first-person shooter games and beyond. Maybe this is the reboot they needed to start a new chapter.
