AblazeInt, the solo developer of the upcoming supernatural action-adventure Psych Rift powered by Godot, showcased this mind-blowing wall transformation scene and unveiled the VFX breakdown showing how the effect was crafted.
The developer explained that the effect is built from two VAT meshes, one for the wall and one for the bricks. As shared by AblazeInt, the main challenge was finding a way to combine everything into a single mesh to make VAT export possible.
Compared to the previously shared gameplay VFX showcase, AblazeInt improved the VAT shader to calculate flat normals dynamically, eliminating the need to store normals in the VAT texture. This change halves VRAM usage and improves performance by reducing texture samples. The full effect, including the shader updates, took two days to complete.
