Free Tutorial on Rigging & Animating Gaussian Splats in Houdini
Bogdan Lazar uses a proxy deformation workflow.
In case you missed it
Houdini 22 has new features for Gaussian Splats
If you have always wanted to delve into the intricate art of creating Gaussian Splats, check out this free tutorial that comes with the project files from 3D Artist Bogdan Lazar. In the learning video, the artist walks through rigging and animating Gaussian Splats in Houdini using a proxy deformation workflow.
In the tutorial, Bogdan Lazar covers the entire pipeline for rigging and animating Gaussian Splats in Houdini. The artist starts with an introduction to what Gaussian Splats are and then proceeds to importing and segmenting them, creating a KineFX skeleton, and binding it to proxy geometry. He then covers APEX logic, animation, and deforming the Gaussian Splat with Look Dev, finishing with a breakdown of Karma rendering.
The project files demonstrate a full setup used to rig and animate a Gaussian Splat through a proxy deformation workflow, using KineFX, APEX, and point deformation inside Houdini. You can download and examine it, using it as a starting point for your own Gaussian Splat animation tests.
