How to Build a Laundry Room Using Unreal Engine 5 & Substance 3D

Yulong Huang showed the process of creating an indoor scene of a laundry room, explained how the assets were made from scratch, and spoke about setting up day and night lighting scenarios.

Introduction

Hello everyone, I am Huang Yulong. It has been ten months since I last published an article on 80 Level. I have been working for a year now, and recently I have been practicing some indoor scene design. Of course, this is mainly through self-study.

Recently, while browsing Behance, I came across Pinpin's indoor work titled "Silence Speak." I really liked it. The project notes mention that it was created using Cinema 4D and Octane Renderer. So, I thought about using Unreal Engine 5 to recreate the design.

Laundry Room Creation

First, I used the built-in camera tracking feature in Cinema 4D to obtain the camera position and perspective relationships of the scene.

Based on the results obtained, I block out in Cinema 4D and aligned the composition and proportions of the scene. After this phase, I finalized the sizes and proportions of most assets in the scene. I searched for numerous relevant models but wasn't satisfied with any of them, so I decided to create everything from scratch.

I used Plasticity, since this is a personal project, performance wasn't a concern, so I skipped low-poly modeling and created textures entirely based on high-poly models. The same approach applies to the table, clothes rack, and bamboo basket.

Lightning

While creating the assets, I imported them into Unreal Engine 5 based on their whitebox positions. I set up physical lighting to match the target effect, and finally adjusted the post-processing volume for the final look refinement.

Pleased with the results, I created an additional lighting setup for the night scene with curtains drawn. Essentially, I removed the key light and only kept the ceiling lights.

Conclusion

Thank you all for your love and support, and a big thanks to the editors for giving me this opportunity to share on 80 Level. I'll keep creating and sharing more works!
