How To Make Stylized Hair Look Like Curves In Maya

There's also a Blender version available.

Stephen Davidian recently shared his latest project, a 3D model of a cute girl in an oversized jacket with sci-fi vibes, based on concept art by Ahmad Beyrouthi, with some creative changes by Stephen. He followed up with a video about his hair workflow, which quickly went viral. In it, he shows how he makes polygon-based hair strips look closer to curve-based hair, using Maya and Arnold.

This method has also been recreated in Blender by Sherzod Kadirov (check out his free feathers tool!). The result isn't ultra-realistic, of course, but it's a handy approach for stylized characters and keeps the geometry fairly lightweight.
