Real-Time GPU-Powered Smoke & Fire Simulation In Blender
Biman Bordoloi is developing a new tool.
Biman Bordoloi, whose Tiny Glade-inspired Blender tool we've featured before, has been working on a tool for real-time smoke and fire simulation for Blender. It reportedly runs directly on the GPU, with everything updating interactively in the viewport so you can tweak parameters and instantly see the results.
It's still a work in progress, but you can check out another example from the developer:
When asked whether he was building on existing research, Biman said, "Roughly 60% established papers, 40% custom engineering to make it all run real-time on GPU inside Blender. The core engine is written in Rust with wgpu, so it's cross-platform and talks directly to Vulkan/Metal/DX12."
As for the release window of this add-on, the developer mentioned it's expected to arrive within the next few months. You can also follow him on X/Twitter to stay updated.
If you're interested in more Blender tools, we've recently featured Sketch2Pose, Light Painter, fantasy hut generator, and WrapKit. Also, in case you missed it, Blender artists can now use V-Ray for free, even in commercial projects.
