Sculpting and Texturing a Fungal Creature Inspired by The Last of Us

Kamil Tondera spoke about the creation process behind the Fungal Creature project, explaining which tools he used to create the vines and bark elements, and detailing how he achieved the organic appearance with hand-painted materials.

Introduction

My name is Kamil Tondera, and I'm a 3D Artist with over eight years of experience creating models for games. I specialize in both environment art and character modeling. My 3D adventure began with a passion for video games. I've always been fascinated by creating worlds and characters, so I decided to learn 3D so I could design them myself.

I acquired most of my skills independently, thanks to many hours of practice, online courses, tutorials, and personal projects. Throughout my career, I've participated in commercial projects — initially focused on architectural visualizations — and then worked on smaller projects where I created game assets and environment elements.

One of the most interesting projects for me was definitely Pioneers of Pagonia, which was a great new experience due to the game's stylized nature.

Fungal Creature

The main inspiration for the creation of Fungal Creature was the TV series and the game "The Last of Us." The idea for the monster arose from the desire to design a character that gave the impression of a creature that had evolved in some dark forest, rather than a classic fantasy monster. Mushrooms served as the basis for the idea; they are fascinating organisms that, in a sense, blur the line between the plant and animal kingdoms.

The project offered an opportunity to combine various organic materials, such as bark, mushrooms, roots, and various plant tissues, into one cohesive and believable form. I wanted to create a creature with both an interesting form and various organic textures.

Modeling

I began with a simple blockout to define the character's silhouette and proportions. In this case, I used simple geometric shapes, primarily "Spheres" and "Cylinders," which I combined and deformed accordingly. This created a humanoid model as a basis for further work in ZBrush.

I then moved on to sculpting the model in high resolution in ZBrush, where most of the anatomy and surface detail were created. The head went through several iterations before reaching its final shape. I wanted it to resemble a skull while incorporating mushroom elements to create a cohesive whole. I intentionally made the eyes asymmetrical and deeply set to give the creature a more disturbing appearance.

Some details, such as the torso and arm elements, were achieved using Blender modifiers like BY-GEN, which, when used correctly, creates nice tissue details.

The right hand, head shape, and vine elements are the result of using the "Curve" object tool and the "Draw" option in Blender. This saves a lot of time when modeling these types of elements.

To build the remaining details, such as bark structures and plant elements, instead of sculpting each detail by hand, I used various brushes and alphas with surface patterns, either from ZBrush's library or ones I created myself. This allowed me to significantly speed up the work while maintaining high-quality detail.

Topology

After completing the high-poly model, I created an optimized mesh in Blender. To retopologize the model, I used a combination of the ZRemesh tool in ZBrush itself and the Blender RetopoFlow tool, which proved invaluable for more complex mesh elements.

I prepared the UV maps in Blender; in this case, I used the UVPackmaster tool, which gives nice control over the creation of UV islands.

Texturing and Lighting

The entire texturing process was completed in Substance 3D Painter. The biggest challenge was combining many different materials to create the impression of a single living organism. I built the textures from multiple layers using masks, procedural generators, and hand-painted details based on Curvature and Ambient Occlusion maps. 
The mushroom surfaces were created by combining varying levels of Roughness with subtle edge highlights.

I built up the vegetation by applying several layers of moss and plant textures. The veins were created using masks and then enhanced with subtle Color Variations. One of the most important elements was avoiding solid colors. Each material contains many subtle tonal transitions, Roughness changes, and refined Color Variations that give the surface a natural character.

The final renders were created in Unreal Engine 5. I used one primary direct light source for the entire silhouette of the character, along with several smaller spotlights to better expose the model's finer details. 
For enhanced effect, I added a Sky Atmosphere and Sky Light with an appropriate HDRI map, which provided soft ambient lighting.

Because Unreal Engine provides various tools for appropriate rendering, I adjusted the contrast and light intensity in the engine itself, in the render options, and in the camera settings.

Conclusion

The biggest challenge was finding a balance between a high level of detail and a clear silhouette. When designing organic creatures, it's easy to overdo it, so I regularly analyzed the model from a distance, focusing on its overall form and key focal points. Personal projects like this allow me to experiment and continually develop both my artistic and technical skills.

Working on this project was a lot of fun and allowed me to better understand the anatomy of plants, fungi, and organic matter in general, and how to combine their various elements into new, interesting shapes.

Above all, I recommend observing nature closely. It provides the most interesting inspiration in terms of forms, colors, and structures. It's also worth spending more time refining the model's proportions and silhouette before adding the smallest details.
