Sony Says "AI Will Unleash the Creativity of Our Studios" While Humans "Remain at the Center"

Sony outlined how PlayStation studios are using AI-assisted workflows for animation, QA, and production while emphasizing that human creators remain central to development.

During a financial results presentation, Sony Group has shared new details about how it plans to integrate artificial intelligence into PlayStation game development, according to VGC and Variety. The company describes AI as a tool that can help “unleash the creativity” of its studios rather than replace developers or performers.

The comments came as part of Sony’s latest corporate and earnings presentations, where the company outlined several areas where AI-assisted workflows are already being explored internally across PlayStation Studios. According to Sony, current applications include automating repetitive tasks, accelerating quality assurance, improving software engineering productivity, and supporting areas such as 3D modeling and animation. Generative AI asset generation was reportedly not emphasized much, if at all.

One of the clearest examples discussed was a tool called “Mockingbird,” which Sony says can dramatically speed up facial animation workflows using performance capture data. The company claims animation work that previously required hours can now be processed “in a fraction of a second.” Studios including Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio have reportedly used the technology in projects including Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered.

At the same time, Sony repeatedly emphasized that AI is intended to augment human creators rather than replace them. The company stated that the “vision, design, and emotional impact” of PlayStation games will continue to come from the talent of its studios and performers.

“For example, our teams created a tool we call Mockingbird that quickly animates 3D facial models based on the performance capture. Importantly, we’re not replacing human performers, but rather optimizing how we process the data from these live captures. With Mockingbird, animation work that would have taken hours can now be completed in a fraction of a second.”

Sony’s position appears focused primarily on production acceleration and workflow efficiency rather than fully AI-generated content. Other recent examples include the company’s acquisition of machine learning startup Cinemersive Labs, which will join PlayStation’s Visual Computing Group to work on rendering, visual computing, and machine learning technologies for games. Or even the advanced PSSR upscaling features on PS5 Pro.

The company has also experimented publicly with AI-powered character interaction systems. Earlier this year, reports surfaced showing a prototype AI-driven version of Aloy from Horizon Forbidden West capable of conversing dynamically with players using synthesized voice and facial animation systems.

At the same time, Sony acknowledged that generative AI still faces major limitations, particularly around consistency and controllability. In collaborative experiments with Bandai Namco Entertainment, the company reportedly identified both substantial productivity gains and ongoing reliability concerns

Sony appears to be positioning AI less as a replacement for creative work and more as a production multiplier designed to free developers from repetitive technical tasks.

Whether players and creators ultimately accept that framing may depend less on corporate messaging and more on how these systems are actually implemented in future PlayStation projects.
