Amazing art. I'm curious how the rocks manage to be such a natural part of the terrain! It really looks like they have been there for ages.
Great job and very inspiring! Thanks for sharing.
Frankly I do not understand why we talk about the past of this CEO. As a player I do not care about what he did or not until his games are good. As an Environmental Artist instead I see a game with a shaky graphics. It is completely without personality, emotion and involvement. It can hardly be considered acceptable especially for the 2019 platforms (which I understand will be the target of this game). Well, this is probably an indie group, with no experience facing a first game in the real market. And that's fine. Do the best you can that even if you fail, you will learn and do better. From a technical point of view the method you are using is very old. It can work but not as you are doing it. I bet you're using Unity, it's easy to see that since I see assets from their asset store. Break your landscapes more, they are too monotonous and contact real 3D artists and level designers. One last thing, the last screenshot is worse than all the previous ones. The lights are wrong and everything screams disaster. Avoid similar disasters in the future.
Yvo von Berg talked a little bit about his recently released tool Tycoon, which allows to build crazy bended structures in 3DS Max. You can purchase this utility at Gumroad.
My name is Yvo von Berg, 21 years old, currently a Dutch Multimedia Design student. I started my 3D adventure a few years ago, it became my passion after my first internship as a 3D environment artist for military simulations. Right now I am working on my final graduation project at Canon and Océ, doing a lot of technical 3D problem solving for real life training simulations.
I could describe myself as a weird mix between art and code. The last few months I realized my focus shifted from the 3D art side to a more technical area. The moment I realized that I could help people by improving their workflow/pipeline was amazing. It feels like I discovered a whole new world of possibilities.
My main goal is to become a Technical Artist, because I really enjoy helping people to create more awesome projects.
Tycoon started out as a combination of a toolrequest for creating pipes and my dream to create rollercoasters in 3D software.
With Tycoon you can easily create custom bending objects and auto snap/align them together. You can also twist and taper meshes.
Tycoon is extremely useful if you want to create objects like: Pipes, Cables, Rollercoasters, Ropes, Fences, Roads and other modulair objects.
So for example if you are a 3D environment artist and you are tasked to create an industrial environment with a lot of pipes, cables: Tycoon is the perfect tool for the job!
Other cool ideas such as:
- Create modulair hard surface parts. (Spaceships!)
- Modulair parts for buildings, hallways or pillars.
- Rollercoasters for your next 3D themepark!
- Ropes for your next pirate ship, including giant squids
Tycoon BETA is currently only available for 3Ds Max. It has been tested in versions 2015,2016 and 2017. (But it should run on older versions as well, I will test it during the beta testing phase) Tycoon is a custom script/tool and it is really easy to install, run and use in your daily projects.
The first Tycoon BETA will release on Friday the 13th May 2016, on Gumroad, price will be only 6 dollars!
I am experimenting with scripting for other 3D software such as Maya, Modo and Blender. So stay tuned!
If you guys have any questions/suggestions/
