Earlier this year, a report suggested that 343 Industries had dropped its proprietary Slipspace Engine and started using Unreal Engine 5 to develop Tatanka, an upcoming battle royale set in the Halo universe. Apparently, the decision had been made after Microsoft's round of layoffs, which affected many of 343 Industries' employees, the departure of 343 Industries Founder Bonnie Ross, and Engine Lead David Berger.

Now, a new job listing seemingly confirms the change as the company is looking for an Audio Director who has experience with Epic Games' engine for its Halo games.

343i is seeking "new Spartans" that can help "build the next generation of games and experiences in our award-winning sci-fi universe." The specialist will collaborate with 343 Industries "to define, create, and lead the audio team to deliver on the audio vision for future Halo titles across internal and external teams."

Other responsibilities of the Audio Director include:

  • Partner across teams inside the studio to establish tools and workflow for audio team.
  • Define audio needs, timelines, and milestones clearly to ensure quality and timely delivery.
  • Create clear audio documentation usable by internal and external teams.
  • Create and implement original audio content into the game.
  • Manage dialogue and sound effect pipelines and partner with music supervisor on music needs.
  • Be a partner with cross-disciplinary design, art, production, engineering, and quality assurance teams to ideate, provide audio and technical assistance, bring gameplay to life, and deliver on audio implementation needs.
  • Be a consistent source of clarity, positive energy and an exemplar of Microsoft and Xbox values.

    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Sound Design, Interactive Design and Development, Communications Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Multimedia Design, or related field AND 5+ years audio or sound design experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of people management experience
  • 2+ years of experience working on AAA games and managing a team in the capacity of Audio Director, Audio Lead, or equivalent role, leading an audio team through all phases of development.

The Additional or Preferred Qualifications section mentions experience working with Unreal Engine tools among other things.

The latest rumor from Hoeg Law's Bitcast livestream also states that 343i is developing a new Halo single-player campaign, but the release date or any other details are unknown.
