Half of Cyberpunk 2's Quest Team Are Former Modders, Says Associate Game Director

CDPR's Paweł Sasko called modding a "foot-in-the-door technique and a gateway into gamedev."

CD PROJEKT RED

Cyberpunk 2 Associate Game Director Paweł Sasko reveals that half of the quest team at CD PROJEKT RED are former modders.

In a recent livestream on the official CDPR YouTube channel, held on October 21, which was dedicated to the new Cyberpunk 2077 update inspired by the second season of the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Sasko expressed his support for modding, calling it a "foot-in-the-door technique and a gateway into gamedev," and shared that many of CDPR's current developers previously created mods: "We actually hired so many modders. I would say, at this point, half of the quest team is all former modders."

"Modding community is really keeping the game alive," Sasko said. "I'm very often looking at what our modders are doing, what they're building. It's very exciting. There's so much creativity, and we, as a studio, always tried to support our modding community as much as we could."

The stream also touched on updates for Cyberpunk 2077, including cross-platform mod support for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S.

Last year, CDPR expanded its teams working on Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4. Previously, the developer said that Cyberpunk 2 was in pre-production. The sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, initially codenamed Project Orion, was unveiled in October 2022 and is being developed with Unreal Engine 5 by a North American division comprising studios in Boston and Vancouver.

Cyberpunk 2077 is CDPR's top-performing title with over 40 million copies sold. It is getting a standalone VR experience, co-developed by CDPR and Zero Latency VR, and a live-action film adaptation, which is in development at Paramount.
