See How Developers Faked 3D Look in Godot for Their Darkwood-Inspired Co-Op Horror

Silk & Sorrow looks a bit like Don't Starve, too.

Silk & Sorrow is an atmospheric co-op horror game made by two friends using the Godot engine. In the game, you play as two orphans who find themselves in a dark, hidden world full of horror. As a true co-op, it is designed to be shared by two players, since only team effort will get you further along.

What makes the game so visually appealing is that it mimics the look of a 3D game through the use of 2D sprites. Everything, including the trees that appear suspiciously three-dimensional, is 2D. In fact, to simulate this effect on the trees, the developers said they used "a small coded version of the parallax system" faking the 3D look entirely.

The developers explained that they used a script that defines several parallax layers "and moves objects in a layer relative to the center of the viewport, with a parallax_scale variable for each layer to decide how fast to move. There is also some modulation going on and some lighting layers so that not every light lights up the entire '3D' object."

In Silk & Sorrow, the 3D-looking 2D world you need to navigate, the Chrysalis, is inhabited by bizarre creatures, and not all of them are friendly. To make sure you don't become their dinner, you need to communicate and solve problems together in this world full of hidden danger.

On your journey through the Chrysalis, you'll meet Glint, an adorable creature who looks like a glowing May bug larva. This cute little companion will help you find your way through the dark environments of the Chrysalis. If you feed it fireflies, Glint will glow like a 200,000-lumen LED flashlight and develop special abilities that can help you on your mission.

Ultimately, you and your friend will have to bring light back into the sad, gloomy world of the Chrysalis. You'll explore its ecosystems and uncover the root of its horrifying decay to save this place before it's lost forever.
