Environment Artist Erika Mariia Molchanova recently impressed us with her fantasy scene with a giant lotus entangling the castle. If you wondered how the artist handled the production of this intricate, detailed scene, check out the breakdown that the creator has recently shared.
The environment, created using a combination of Blender, Unreal Engine, Substance 3D Painter, and Houdini, is the artist's project created as an assignment at the Digital Arts and Entertainment program. The creator shared that the task was to make a corridor, which eventually evolved into a larger-scale passage. According to Molchanova, she challenged herself to push her skills in modularity, lighting, and composition, while also keeping the texture count as low as possible.
The lighting involved directional light, player guiding lights, some extra spot lights for the area, and a brighter 'shine' spot light.
The trim sheet was modeled in Blender and baked. Maps used in the project, except for the water maps, were created by the artist in Substance 3D Painter.
The artist used her custom HDA overgrowth tool:
Erika Mariia Molchanova also shared a walkthrough video, giving a closer look at the environment as an explorable game level:
