See How This Western-Themed Survival Horror Game Fakes Interiors Behind Windows

Parallax never gets old.

Hear Tell of Hauntings is an upcoming survival horror game set in the twilight of the American frontier from Sean Gause, who continues to share regular development updates. Recently, he showcased several examples of how he uses parallax to create the illusion of 3D space and volume on flat surfaces.

Here, it's a single shader and a few texture inputs. There are base window textures, as well as separate color and emission inputs for the interior and curtain layers. A few adjustable sliders are also used to control the depth. It's a classic technique that shifts texture coordinates based on the viewer's angle and a height map, but admittedly, it still looks cool every time it's used.

Hard to believe these walls are actually flat too, isn't it?

The developer has then enhanced the scene by adding a rain shader, for which he kindly shared the node setup:

In Hear Tell of Hauntings, you play as deputy Adelaide Clancy, who investigates the eerie Wraith estate after receiving a wedding invitation from two long-deceased lovers, all while searching for a missing sheriff. The game features strategic combat and resource management, puzzles, and many upgradable frontier-era weapons.

Have a look at Sean's recent updates and follow him on X/Twitter to keep up with news and learn more about how game development works behind the scenes. Also, don't forget to wishlist Hear Tell of Hauntings on Steam.
