This 3D Take on a Mermaid Looks Scary But Weirdly Fascinating
Juan Hernández is back with another incredible creature.
This time, the 3D Visual Development Artist, Juan Hernández, shared on his ArtStation profile the Mermaid - Reimagined project, which is a personal take on the mythical creature.
The artist explained that he wanted to focus on cinematography, and he used Blender, ZBrush, and Substance 3D Painter.
The character looks like it's part of a fantasy movie, with vibes of The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro.
I imagine this mermaid with a curious personality, wanting to discover things beyond her world.
Check out some of the WIP images the artist shared, showing how he took references from real animals and the different faces the character could have, how he proportioned the body, and part of the modeling process:
Juan Hernández is an artist who has a lot of skills in creating realistic characters in cinematographic settings. Some of which we have shared in the past are this unusual jar-like dwarf, or this adorable recreation of Stitch.
And other amazing projects Hernández has shared on his ArtStation are the Dragon Visual Development, which was part of the How to Train Your Dragon live-action, or this cute Bubbly – Sea Creature, which allowed him to experiment with unusual designs.
