This War Short Film Made with Unreal Engine 5 Is Truly Heartbreaking
It reminded me of one of my favorite movies.
Emily van Lieshout, Unreal Engine Artist, shared on her social media the Count to Ten project, which is a war short film.
The artist explained that she had had this project in mind for a long time, but she didn't make it until she had the skills to do it. She also mentioned that she learned a lot about cinematics and improved her skills with Unreal Engine.
The short film shows a young soldier trying to calm himself by counting to ten in the barracks, but they are in the middle of a combat, and he has to go out and face the war.
The project shows the crude and sad reality of an armed conflict. It reminded me of the movie All Quiet on the Western Front, which is an adaptation of a book that also depicts a young man dealing with the horrors of war.
The facial expressions of the characters really show their emotions, allowing you to imagine what they are thinking and feel the pain they feel.
The artist used Substance 3D Painter, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, and Maya. She mentioned that it took her three months to finish this project.
Check out other cinematic shots of the film:
Emily van Lieshout is an artist who focuses on creating cinematics with Unreal Engine, like this short film SILENCE, which is inspired by Battlefield and Call of Duty, and it's a project that allowed her to work with lip sync, lighting, and customizing the MetaHumans.
Or this Dissolve Cinematic, which is a project that was focused on Houdini-based disintegration effects, and it was inspired by the art style of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. She wanted to convey the feelings of beauty and elegance, along with a touch of loss and fragility.
Check out other short films we have shared in the past, like Bad Decisions Studio's Haruki, or Robin Lochmann's film that explores ritualistic transformation, or Maxim Gehricke's emotional short film SEN.
