3D Character Artist Shares a Jinx Fan Art Made with ZBrush and Blender
It definitely has the iconic essence of the character.
3D Character Artist Eugene Roienko shared on ArtStation an incredible Jinx recreation of Arcane season 2 he made using ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, Blender, RizomUV, and Maya.
The artist explained that season 2 of Arcane was a motivation for him to learn 3D art, and he set a goal to recreate Jinx as close as possible to the show. At first, he tried to work with a game-ready pipeline, but changed to a vis-ved approach.
"It was my first stylized character, so I started from a simple sphere with no base mesh. I wanted to push my sculpting skills and see if I could nail stylized proportions from scratch."
Roienko also mentioned how he achieved the iconic Arcane-style through texturing that involved a lot of trial and error. For the hair, he used Blender's hair particle system mixed with a custom shader that allowed him to achieve the 2D appearance while keeping control over the strands.
The rendering part was more challenging because traditional 3D renders weren't working out, and he almost quit the project, but thanks to a YouTube tutorial, he learned how the Arcane rendering process works.
He explained that he had to treat the character like a 2D animation instead of a 3D render. He rendered the pure albedo, AO, hard shadows, and an emission pass for the hair separately, then made a composition with everything in Photoshop with filters and level adjustments.
