Fantasy Greek Female Warrior Imagined In 3D
Check out Nikita Vasilkov's take on Simon Gocal's Arlinoe, the Guardian of the Boy-King.
Nikita Vasilkov
Concept Artist Simon Gocal imagined Arlinoe as a slightly less grumpy version of Sam Vimes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Arlinoe serves as the guardian of a boy king and has loyally worked for the royal family for many years. In her younger days, she was known as one of the fastest fencers in the capital, though age has begun to slow her down a little.
Her helmet's decorations are a mix of Assyrian and Greek art:
Senior 3D Character Artist Nikita Vasilkov was inspired by this design, as well as his love for ancient Greek culture, medieval history, and fantasy. When recreating Arlinoe in 3D, he wanted to break away from some of the habits in his workflow and challenge himself.
The main goals were to render the character in Unreal Engine 5.6, create the hair using an Alembic groom instead of traditional hair cards, and experiment with a slightly less optimized model in terms of polycount and number of texture sets. Another important objective was to complete the entire project in less time compared to previous works.
Nikita shared his breakdown in a Games Artist article, which you can read here. You can also visit the project's ArtStation page to see more WIP shots, and scroll down for renders of Arlinoe:
