Thief: The Dark Project Remastered Coming This Winter
The legendary stealth title returns 28 years later with 4K resolution, 120 FPS performance, modern controls, and improved gameplay features.
Known for reviving PC classics such as System Shock and Star Wars: Dark Forces, Nightdive Studios unveiled its latest project: a new version of Thief: The Dark Project, updating the classic Looking Glass Studios' title with modern gamepad support, visuals up to 4K, 120 FPS support, and quality-of-life upgrades.
You'll once again step into the role of Garrett, navigating maze-like levels filled with advanced NPCs that can hear, communicate, and trigger alarms if they detect suspicious behavior. Each mission also offers three difficulty settings, with varying objectives designed to maximize replayability. Built using KEX Engine by Nightdive Studios, the remaster includes both Thief: The Dark Project and the expanded content from the 1999 Thief Gold re-release, incorporating additional missions and updates.
Released in 1998, the game stood out for its first-person perspective that wasn't focused on combat, which led its developers to describe it as a "first-person sneaker". Thief also pioneered stealth design by using light and sound as core gameplay systems, allowing players to avoid detection and outmaneuver enemies rather than rely on confrontation.
