Immerse yourself in an eerie and breathtaking atmosphere of an ancient yet well-preserved cemetery by taking a look at Hassled Churchyard, a stunning 3D environment set up by 3D Environment and Prop Artist for Games, Jacopo Bon.
As explained by the artist, the scene was made to combine composition, lighting, and storytelling into one majestic piece, with the main goal being to transform the traditional depiction of a graveyard – often seen as a flat, uninspiring environment for obvious reasons – into a setting full of variety and depth, where each element guides the viewer's eye and enhances the narrative.
On the technical side of things, Jacopo employed common workflows, such as trim sheets, vertex painting, and 2UVs, and experimented with Unreal Engine 5's texture painting and the PCG framework to further hone his technical skills.
The software used to bring the environment to life is quite extensive, including, in addition to UE5, such programs as ZBrush, Maya, Substance 3D Painter/Designer, SpeedTree, RizomUV, Marmoset Toolbag, and Marvelous Designer, as well as Adobe's Photoshop and AE, Megascans, and assets sourced from Textures.com.
Besides the final renders, the creator has also shared a comprehensive breakdown featuring tons of WIP shots and providing more insight on modeling, texturing, composition, and other aspects of the pipeline.
We highly encourage you to check out the full breakdown by visiting Jacopo's ArtStation page.
