Civilization Creator Sid Meier Warns that Monetization Can Harm Gaming

The game designer claims that studios have to focus on gameplay more as relying on in-game purchases may result in losing customers.

Civilization creator Sid Meier has shared his thoughts on the monetization business model saying that the game industry should focus more on gameplay. In an interview with the BBC, Meier noted that relying on in-game purchases, as a consequence, the companies can lose their audiences.

The game designer explained that focusing on gameplay may be the "real challenge and the real opportunity". "People can assume that a game is going to be fun and what it needs for success are more cinematics or monetisation or whatever," said Meier, "But if the core just is not there with good gameplay, then it won't work."

In Meier's opinion, the studios need to maintain the high quality of their games so that they would be "fun to play" as currently "there are so many forms of entertainment out there".

Meier concluded by saying that he believes gaming is "in a good position" now, although he pointed out that the game industry has to "realise how critical gameplay is" highlighting that what really keeps players delighted and involved is the engine itself.
