Darewise and DMarket Launch Free-Market Economy for Life Beyond

Much-anticipated MMO Life Beyond from the Darewise studio lets players trade in-game gear on third-party marketplace DMarket.

Beyond the Ordinary

The Paris-based Darewise studio is made up of renowned developers with an AAA background at Ubisoft, CD Projekt Red, and Rockstar

Darewise’s ambitions match their experience, to say the least. “I want to make the game that a generation is going to play. I have this very strong desire to create a generational thing,” says Darewise CEO Benjamin Charbit, a former monetization director on Assassin’s Creed at Ubisoft.

This game with the ambition to engage the generation is Life Beyond, a forthcoming futuristic free-to-play MMO that welcomes players to explore an extremely massive and persistent open world of the planet Corvus.

The size of the world is one of the game’s distinctive features as well as the absence of the main storyline. But what’s truly out of the ordinary is the idea of players creating their own quests for other players.

As a player, I can create a contract and say, go explore that part of the map and report to me what's over there,” Charbit explains.

Due to this contract system, players of any type – from fighters to farmers – can find their place on the planet Corvus. “You can have activities that fit with what you're after,” – says Darewise CEO. “And all of these activities are connected with social mechanics. If you like farming, what you're going to collect can be used by someone else who hates doing this, but might need that resource.”

Inside the P2P Economy

The above-mentioned P2P contracts and Life Beyond’s in-game economy as a whole are empowered by real money. To facilitate and expand this economy, Darewise has recently partnered with DMarket, an in-game items trading platform.

By integrating with DMarket, Darewise enables Life Beyond players to trade in-game items among themselves, and earn real money in the game’s massive and persistent virtual world,” their press release goes.

Based on the free-market model, Life Beyond’s economy is literally driven by the community. Players are the ones to determine the value of the assets they craft or farm in the game. With a vast variety of craftable and purchasable items, Darewise and DMarket have laid the foundation for a robust and engaging economy to flourish.”

Being a free-to-play title, Life Beyond is bound to use microtransactions but, as we can see, they are not the microtransactions we used to. Players not only buy gear from the developer, but they are also free to trade items among themselves.

Taking the P2P contracts and P2P trading together, it sounds like the opportunity to find a virtual job on the planet Corvus and make a real living from that. In this case, the old meme about two jobs – a model on Instagram and a soldier on Call of Duty – will not be that funny anymore. An explorer or farmer on Life Beyond might become a pretty serious thing.

If Life Beyond really becomes such a big thing, we will see quite soon. “As the game is now in closed alpha, owners of Life Beyond Founder’s Packs are already exploring planet Corvus, created by Darewise, and benefiting from the in-game item ecosystem launched by DMarket,” – the studio and the platform announced.
