Elden Ring Director Says He Was Nervous About the Launch

Hidetaka Miyazaki told about his anxiety surrounding the launch of Elden Ring and shared how George RR Martin influenced the project.

Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki shared that he felt anxious about the release of the long-awaited FromSoftware game. Speaking to Japanese Famitsu (via VCG), he revealed that the launch was "not a very pleasant time" for him adding that he had felt the same way about the previous titles as well. "I'm sure I'm relieved, but I'm more anxious about it. I never get used to it', said the director.

The director also shared how Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin influenced the project, saying that Moartin's lore inspired the team in many ways. Although he didn't specify what exactly Martin's contribution was, Miyazaki implied that the writer helped the team to create overall ideas that were reflected in some essential plot points, while the team decided upon some specifics later.

"At first, it wasn’t called the ‘Ring’, but I think [Martin] talked about the Elden Ring-like existence and the image of the opportunity for it to break," Miyazaki commented. "However, it was only spoken as an abstract concept, and I don’t think he had a concrete motif such as a golden tree at that time."

The game director also explained that although Elden Ring may have some similarities with Sekiro that was released in 2019, the two games were developed at the same time, so it wasn't the direct feedback from Sekiro that influenced the game but rather his direction. "Since I directed both, it is certain that they influenced each other", Miyazaki pointed out.

Since the release, Elden Ring has seen excellent reviews and great sales. It was the biggest UK launch outside of Call of Duty and FIFA franchises. The game even outselled the newly-released Horizon: Forbidden West. Miyazaki noted that from the beginning, the team expected that the project "would be the largest scale ever".
