As many gamers say, Dungeon Keeper, a timeless classic in the management genre, remains unrivaled despite numerous attempts by other games to replicate its devilishly captivating setting and addictive progression. However, it's hard to play the game now because the original 1997 version suffers from outdated visuals and limitations in line with modern standards.

For years, Dungeon Keeper needed a remaster, but its owner EA failed to deliver it. However, the gaming community stepped in to save the day with KeeperFX. KeeperFX has been diligently working towards the rescue of Dungeon Keeper for the past fifteen years. The project began in 2008 and faced some hurdles along the way, particularly until 2016. Yet, since then, significant progress has been made. KeeperFX has steadily introduced support for Windows 7, 10, and 11, along with compatibility for high-resolution and 4K screens. In addition, the project has modernized the game's controls and even included extra campaigns, enhancing the overall experience.

With the latest 1.0 release, the developers of KeeperFX proudly announce that their latest version has completely rewritten the original Dungeon Keeper code, making KeeperFX a true open-source standalone game. The 1.0 release introduces new features, including improved framerates, enhanced AI behavior, and higher-quality voiceovers for the additional campaigns.

Excitingly, KeeperFX 1.0 also introduces two new units: the Druid, a frost-focused counterpart to the Warlock, and the Time Mage, a recolored version of the Wizard with teleportation, speed, and chicken-transforming abilities. While these units are not found in the original campaign, they are available in the included custom campaigns.

If you can't help but start playing the game, you can download KeeperFX, which requires ownership of Dungeon Keeper for copyright reasons. Fortunately, Dungeon Keeper is currently on sale on GOG.

Recently, Dene Carter, a renowned designer of Dungeon Keeper, launched a new game called Moonring that captivates players with the essence of classic RPGs from earlier times. If you're interested, you can check our article.
