Import Animated 3D Models In The Latest After Effects' Public Beta

Adobe has released a new beta version of After Effects, featuring the option to import 3D files with embedded animations, multi-layer keyframe copy-paste, and several UI improvements.

True 3D Workspace, which lets you import, light, shade, and render 3D models, has recently left beta, yet Adobe continues to introduce more features to enhance the 3D capabilities of its popular software for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing.

The latest beta version of After Effects allows you to import GLB or GLTF 3D models with embedded animations, even fully-rigged character motion, and incorporate them into your composition. Like other 3D layers, you can animate their transforms, move the camera, add lights to change their look and combine them with different models.

It's very simple to use, all you would need to do is to do is import a GLB or GLTF 3D model file into your project, add it to the composition, and specify the Model Settings. In the Timeline panel, expand the properties of the 3D model layer and the Animation Options to use the Name dropdown menu to select the animation that you want to include in your composition.

Another prominent feature of this beta build is the ability to copy and paste keyframe selections across multiple layers.

You can copy keyframes between layers for the same property, such as Position, or between different properties that use the same type of data, for example between Position and Anchor Point.

After Effects interface has also been updated to match the Adobe Spectrum design system, which unifies the look across all Adobe Creative Cloud applications while delivering accessibility enhancements such as the option to switch to a light UI theme.

As usual, Adobe After Effects' beta builds are available via the Creative Cloud with an Adobe ID. With the Public beta program, you can try out experimental features and builds of Adobe's software before they reach full release.
