Sony is laying off 90 employees across its North American offices, most of the positions were cut among sales and marketing decisions. The previously unreported cuts came into effect in the last week of March 2022.

As reported by Axios, the decision wasn't made as a result of any financial troubles at the company (according to PlayStation's previous fiscal year report, its revenue reached nearly $25 billion). PlayStation management attributed the cuts to a "global transformation" of the company's business operations.

The company has proceeded to close its "merchandising" division that promoted PlayStation products in retail stores as it presumably intends to shift toward direct-to-consumer marketing and move away from retailers and physical game sales.

Currently, Sony sells more than half of its digital games directly to players. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of these sales has increased: according to the company's previous full-year report, 65% of all sales were digital (compared to 53% the year earlier).

Although the shift may be positive for the company, one of the laid-off employees shared that they were "disappointed" that the company did not inform the department about the layoffs sooner. They also believe that Sony could do more to find alternative positions for employees.
