They shared some tips, so heed them to be a more positive person.

Cities: Skylines 2 developer Colossal Order has shared its first Word of the Week this year, saying it was working on modding support and the Editor. Before they are rolled out, the community will see some bug fixes. Speaking of the community, the studio also mentioned the rising levels of toxicity, directed both at the developers and other players.

"Last but not least, we have seen a growing tendency of toxicity in our community, something we have not experienced to this extent before. Not only directed towards our devs but also our fellow community members - resulting in people hesitating to engage with the community. In the long run, this will really hurt not only the mood and the happiness of community members but also discourage creativity and modding, something we would be very sad to see."

Colossal Order added that such behavior demotivates the team and makes it less productive, then asked how it can help the situation: "Should we add more moderation or is the only option to pull back our engagement on our end?"

The company did have some other ideas and suggested steps to make the community less toxic:

  • Give feedback and disagree, but do it constructively! Be specific and detailed, and don't worry about what others think. We have a diverse community so opinions and experiences will always vary.
  • Assume people mean well and remember that tone can be hard to convey in writing.
  • Help us make the community a nice place for everyone by showing your fellow mayors how to give constructive feedback.
  • Always be kind

The reception was mixed: some supported the developers, encouraging players to be more constructive and polite, while others said the time wasted talking about toxicity should be spent on fixing the game instead, and no one would be toxic if it had been released in a better state.

Cities: Skylines 2 had a rocky launch. Players call it unfinished and buggy and criticize the studio for how slowly patches are rolled out. I'm not sure Colossal Order understands its own position if "pulling back engagement" is a strategy they want to use to avoid toxicity – the exact opposite of what players ask for.
