Cory Barlog Urged Publishers to Stop Online Requirement for Single-Player Games

The God of War developer asked publishers to stop requiring an internet connection for single-player games. Devolver Digital immediately replied: "Ok."

Santa Monica's Cory Barlog, the game director of God of War and producer of God of War Ragnarök, recently turned to game publishers asking them to stop requiring an internet connection to launch single-player games.

On October 1, Barlog took to Twitter to complain about his recent purchase of FIFA 23 for the Steam Deck. Santa Monica's creative director wrote that he was looking forward to playing the game, although was unable to do it as it doesn't run on the device due to anti-cheat. The developer then decided to play another game, Dragon Age.

However, he couldn't do that too as the game required installing a launcher and an internet connection which Barlog didn't have as he was on a plane that didn't have Wi-Fi.

Being upset by the fact that he was unable to play this game either, Barlog decided to share his thoughts on Twitter urging publishers to stop imposing such a restriction.

"Dear all publishers: stop with the online requirement for single player games. Just let me play a game on my Steam Deck!" he wrote.

A few minutes later, Devolver Digital, the company that publishes a number of games where a network connection is not required, responded to the proposal of the game director. "Ok," the publisher replied in the thread.

Barlog, in turn, praised the publisher for not introducing these senseless restrictions saying "you are one of the good ones."
