Epic Games Invests in 3D Technology Company M-XR

The company will use the investment to expand its team as well as further develop 3D production solutions for studios and creators.

A 3D production technology company M-XR announced that it received an undisclosed investment from Epic Games which is known as the creator of Fortnite and Unreal Engine.

According to the company, the capital will be used toward expanding M-XR's team along with further development of 3D production solutions for studios and creators. The investment will also facilitate collaboration between M-XR and Quixel, the company that is owned by Epic Games.

Founded in 2018, M-XR has been focusing on reshaping the 3D asset creation process utilizing 3D scanning. M-XR states that its technology allows users to measure and extract real-world materials across a 3D object, which results in a photorealistic render when the asset is placed into a real-time engine.

M-XR had previously received Epic MegaGrant to develop its 3D capture methodology. With the new deal, the company will work closely with Epic Games and the Quixel team to optimize the companies' abilities to generate assets at scale which will bolster creators to build their desired worlds within Unreal Engine.

"In order for virtual worlds to scale and content to flourish we need to solve 3D production bottlenecks. Over the past 30 years, innovations in computer graphics and computation have surpassed expectations. However, the 3D file format hasn’t really evolved or changed," M-XR CEO Ryan Howell said.

"Currently the bar for producing a realistic 3D asset or experience is incredibly high, almost exclusive to teams of highly skilled 3D artists who possess the relevant skills and experience. In order for us to build enough variety for these existing and emerging mediums, we must develop tools that empower new and existing stakeholders to creatively explore new mediums without the hindrance of time or cost."
