In early March, a former employee of now-closed Free Radical Design shared gameplay footage of a planned TimeSplitters 2 remake featuring shootouts across various maps. The game was reportedly designed to be offered as a free-to-play title and was compared in style to Fortnite.

After a while, Steve Ellis, former Founder of Free Radical Design, shared some insights on the leaked gameplay of TimeSplitters 2 in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

According to Ellis, the video showcased an early prototype of the game, which was later abandoned in favor of a different concept.

"Personally… I would never release footage of a half-finished game because you're going to get people jumping to the wrong conclusion about what it is. Obviously, it would be pointless to just clone Fortnite, so that's not what we were doing," Ellis shared.

"We went through a number of different ideas. But there were three distinct concepts that we tried. And the one that the leaked video showed was not the one we were working on when we got canceled. We had changed to quite a different concept, and everyone on the team was really enthusiastic about it," Ellis concluded.

Speaking of Free Radical Design, the studio was shut down in December 2023 due to the Embracer restructuring program that affected over 1,400 employees.
