Bill Roper, one of the original developers who served as producer, writer, and director of the dark fantasy action role-playing game Hellgate: London, has announced the development of a new game inspired by the original. The game, currently codenamed Hellgate: Redemption, is being developed at Roper's new studio, Lunacy Games.

Hellgate: London, originally released on October 31, 2007, was developed by Flagship Studios and published by EA and Namco.

The game quickly gained attention for its unique blend of action and role-playing elements set against the background of a post-apocalyptic London.

Despite its initial success and unique gameplay, the developer closed down in 2008, and the game went offline. It was later revived on Steam in 2018 after the publisher HanbitSoft took over the franchise.

Returning to the sequel Hellgate: Redemption, both Lunacy Games and HanbitSoft have revealed little about the game, except that it will be a "triple-A PC/console game" built using Unreal Engine 5.

In an interview with GamesBeat, Roper shared some insight into their vision for the new game:

"I’ve always felt I had unfinished business with the Hellgate IP, which is why our codename for the project is Hellgate: Redemption."

“We’re keeping core gameplay and lore elements of Hellgate: London in our current design, but our intent is to build an exciting new experience that takes advantage of the numerous advances the industry has seen over the past 17 years since the original game launched."
