Joint-Based Skin Deformation in God of War Ragnarök Will Be Explained at GDC 2023

Join Santa Monica's Tenghao Wang at this year's GDC to learn more about the joint-based skin deformation and systematic rig and dynamic bone techniques used for Ragnarök.

Senior Technical Artist at Santa Monica Studio Tenghao Wang has recently announced that he will hold a session during the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2023, planning to share a detailed breakdown of how the high level of fidelity skin deformation was achieved with joint-based rigging in the studio's God of War Ragnarök.

During the lecture, scheduled to take place on March 24th, Tenghao is going to demonstrate a systematic joint-based rig that can fit the curve fiber structure of the muscle, ensuring volume preservation. Additionally, the artist will discuss the implementation details of a new dynamic bone technique, which approximates muscle, fat, and skin jiggle effect, and exhibit how this technique can improve the impact feel of combat.

Please note that this session is primarily aimed at Technical Animators, Technical Artists, and Animation Programmers. It is strongly recommended that attendees possess basic knowledge of rigging and linear algebra.
