Overwatch 2 Servers Hit by a "Mass DDoS Attack"

Overwatch 2 is experiencing a "mass DDoS attack" that prevents fans from playing the game on the launch day.

On October 4, Blizzard rolled out the continuation of its hero shooter, Overwatch 2. Unfortunately, the launch didn't go as smoothly as planned – a number of players experienced errors when trying to connect to matches as well as difficulties in logging into the game's services.

Blizzard initially explained that the game is experiencing server issues saying that the company's teams were working hard to fix them. However, later the company stated that Overwatch 2 servers have been hit by a mass distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

As noted on Overwatch 2's known issues page, some players who launched the game on PC or consoles are encountering "Unexpected Server Errors", while others are "experiencing server disconnects." In addition, some players currently may not see some cosmetics, items, and currency.

It's unclear how long it will take for the servers to be fully functioning. Both Blizzard president Mike Ybarra and Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller noted that the teams are currently "working hard" on solving the issues.

"We’re steadily making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack. We’re all hands on deck and will continue to work throughout the night," Keller wrote.

The developer thanked fans for their patience and promised to share more information as it becomes available.
