If you were looking forward to the League of Legends-themed MMO project Riot Games has been developing for a few years, unfortunately, you will have to wait for some more. Riot has explicitly stated, that we won't be hearing about this project for potentially several years.

Recently, on his X/Twitter account, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill announced that the development of League of Legends MMO had been "reset" a while ago and the game won't appear for "likely several years". This wasn't an easy decision but the developers considered it necessary as it didn't feel like this project set in the League of Legends' Runeterra world brought anything new to the genre:

"We don't believe you all want an MMO that you've played before with a Runeterra coat of paint; to truly do justice to the potential of Runeterra and to meet the incredibly high expectations of players around the world, we need to do something that truly feels like a significant evolution of the genre", added Marc Merrill.

As a sign of the creative reset, Marc Merrill introduced Fabrice Condominas as the new MMO's executive producer, who's known for his work on Bioware's Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda. He also shared some insights into what the MMO development team has been up to lately:

"We started laying the groundwork for this pivot some time ago and over the last year under Vijay Thakkar's management, we built key components of the technical foundation to create the kind of ambitious game we're talking about. We're grateful for Vijay's leadership and that he'll be part of the game leadership team going forward as our Technical Director."

Lastly, Merrill announced that the project will "go dark" for "a long time – likely several years", which is integral for the team to focus on the amount of ambitious work ahead of them. However, this is done in good faith, as the developers understand the excitement surrounding this project and will be "pouring their hearts and souls into making something that they hope you'll love":

"Resetting our development path also means we will be 'going dark' for a long time – likely several years. This silence will help provide space for the team to focus on the incredible amount of work ahead of them. We understand the excitement and anticipation that surrounds new information, but we ask for your trust during this silent phase.

Remember, 'no news is good news', as it means we're hard at work, pouring our hearts and souls into making something that we hope you'll love", concluded Marc Merrill.
