Sony Sold 4.5M Units of PlayStation 5 Sales During Holidays

PlayStation 5 sales set a new earnings record for Sony despite the console being hard to purchase in stores.

The new console from Sony broke a record with 4.5M units sold in less than 2 months since its release. PS4 has 1.4 million units sold during the holiday season as well. 

The successful sales brought Sony and $8.4 billion in revenue, which is 25% higher compared to the last quarter of 2019. The hardware division of Sony also got higher operating profit with a 27% increase. However, Sony revealed that "strategic price points for PS5 hardware...were set lower than the manufacturing costs."

The digital software sales of SIE increased 42% this year with $4.1 billion earned in revenue. The bigger part of the sales comes from the add-on content purchase ($2.4 billion) while physical game sales brought $483M.
