Tears of the Kingdom Provides a Narrative Explanation for Weapon Breakage

The developers of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have offered a story explanation for the game's weapon degradation system.

The developers of the recently released The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have provided a narrative explanation for the game's controversial weapon degradation system.

It's safe to say that the previous installment in the series, Breath of the Wild, is considered one of the most acclaimed games to date. Still, it has faced criticism and controversy due to its implementation of weapon degradation – the mechanic entails the gradual wearing down and eventual breakage of all weapons used by Link.

Although weapon degradation has been a topic of extensive discussion, Nintendo seems unwavering in its stance on the matter, as it resurfaced in Tears of the Kingdom. As noticed by ResetEra user ryushe, the latest The Legend of Zelda game not only reintroduces the mechanic but also delves deeper into its reasoning.

In the game, if players visit Purah's workshop located on Lookout Landing, they can discover a journal containing Purah's notes regarding the Upheaval.

The journal reveals that the miasma resulting from the Upheaval is causing illness among the residents of Hyrule. Additionally, the miasma has a negative impact on their weapons, leading to their frequent breakage.

"As if guided, the miasma coiled about our weapons," the journal reads. "There isn't a single weapon we know of that hasn't decayed as a result."

In other words, Purah's notes explicitly address the concept of weapon degradation. This effectively emphasizes Nintendo's commitment to this mechanic, signifying its significance within the game world and gameplay experience.
