The Background of De-Aging VFX Technologies

Learn the details of how the de-aging VFX technology was developing at Disney animation studios at the beginning of the 2000s. 

Have you seen critically acclaimed Irishman where the shown story constantly switches between the past and the present? You’ve probably heard about the controversial Gemini man starring Will Smith where he has to play the main character and the younger version of this character, too. 

The technology behind these tricks with de-aging has been in development for over 15 years in Disney animation studio. Back then, artists from Disney and The Secret Lab even created the first project, Human Face Project, with the human performance and presented it during SIGGRAPH 2002. 

Cartoon Brew talked to two members from the project’s team and discussed the initial tests for Human Face Project, how the technology was further developed and used in Gemini Man as well as technical insights into how Hiroki Itokazu worked with the blend shapes and maps.
