The New Skate Will Be a Live-Service F2P Game

The game will feature microtransactions but there won't be paid loot boxes or any paid gameplay advantages.

On Thursday, EA and developer Full Circle released a new 18-minute video, sharing some details on the highly-anticipated new Skate game. Among other things, the developer announced that the next installment in the Skate series will be a live-service free-to-play title. 

According to the developers, the game which is now simply titled skate. won't be a sequel, a reboot, or a prequel. Instead, it will be an "authentic revolution" of the franchise. Speaking to The Verge, the creative director of the game Deran Chung shared: "That is not only an evolution of the franchise, but it’s an evolution of where skateboarding is and was from 2010 to now and also where games are from then to now."

skate. will feature microtransactions, but Full Circle general manager Dan McCullo emphasized that the game will not be pay-to-win. According to him, no map areas will be locked behind paywalls and the game will not have paid loot boxes or any paid gameplay advantages. Instead, monetization will be more about cosmetics.

The game will be available on Windows PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. Besides, the developer is also working on a mobile version, which is currently in the early stages of development. Full Circleshared that there will be cross-play and cross-progression across all platforms as well.

Speaking of the release date creative director Deran Chung stated that the game will be out "when it’s ready". "We’re going to take our time and not put any unrealistic expectations on when it comes to a launch date," he said.
