You Can't Ride Worms at Dune Awakening Launch

Blame the movie.

Dune: Awakening won't let you ride sandworms at launch – a shame for a game with "dune" in the name and a giant worm in the trailer. But don't despair: Funcom might add the ability in one of the updates.

At GDC 2024, the game's director Joel Bylos explained that not every element of the Fremen culture will be shown from day one because they should appear in the Dune: Part Two movie first. According to Bylos (via The Gamer), Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the films which also collaborated with Funcom on the game, decided that its media would get to the Fremen first back when the game was supposed to be launched before Part Two.

So worm riding, a part of Fremen's activities, will have to wait for an update even though Dune: Part Two is already out. It's likely other cultural peculiarities will also be absent at first, but hopefully, Funcom will be quick to provide some more content.

What you won't see much in Awakening is religion, as Bylos shared with Eurogamer. The developers "sidestep" this aspect, although I'm sure we'll see glimpses of it, just not in the central position.

Dune: Awakening will be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S when the time comes – it still doesn't have a release date.
