Character/Creature Costume Design for Film & Games

Jerad Marantz – Freelance Concept Artist

In this class we will focus on designing humanoid aliens in subtle costumes Similar to projects I work on from DC and Marvel. The Process will start in photoshop and will model the character out in brush with a final render in key shot This class is a great benefit as it will go beyond the typical class demo style work to a finished portfolio piece that will be included in my own portfolio so you get to see every step and tweak made to make it presentable at the professional level The Class is Live every week and I look forward to interacting with each of you.

Next Gen Character Creation

Adam Skutt – Senior 3D Character Artist

This class will work similar to a live mentorship as each student approaches the creation of a AAA game character for their portfolio. Students should expect to cover Head and Hair, Costume Elements, Low Poly UV’s and Processing required to get the asset real-time ready finishing with Material and Texture creation to set up the final model in engine with final images. Unlike previous classes this class will feature a mid term and final to allow catch up and focused work time during which you have the option (weeks 4 and 8) for general advice for portfolios and resume workshops

Next Gen Creature Creation

Jason Martin – Lead Character Artist

This course will focus on the creation of compelling Sci-Fi and fantasy based creatures for Next-Gen applications. With an emphasis on aesthetically pleasing designs and forms, students will learn and practice the methods used in production to create memorable characters. Beyond this, students will be able to pick from a multitude of visual styles ranging from Sci-Fi realism or stylized fantasy, to something in between or beyond.  And for those who are not well versed or practice in the art of creating from imagination- don’t fret. Students will be allowed (and in many cases, encouraged) to base their creature models from established concept art.

Stylized Character Creation – From Cartoon to Comic Realism

Hannah Kang – Character Artist

A few things students will learn in this course include: blocking out characters efficiently with simple geometric form, going from stylized/cartoon character to comic realism, anatomy of the body and face, retopologizing your character and props to get in the habit of clean working pipeline, adding design choices that drives the story of your character, and bringing life and story to your character with Pose. Students will also cover simple lighting techniques to show the importance of lighting their character and go through a tour of Legacy Effects Studio!

Variable Concept Art Techniques for Game Environments

Kenneth Fairclough – Senior Concept Artist

Many artists apply to the studio with portfolios lacking next gen skills needed in todays AAA titles. This class focuses on the creation of environment concept art for games. Demonstrations highlighting contemporary and emerging techniques will take you through all the stages of creating a polished environment concept. You will gain the skills needed for being an adaptive and versatile concept artist such as 3D thumbnail sketching, photo-real rendering, and VR concept art techniques.
