Anticthon: An Upcoming Earth-Sized MMORPG With AI-Voiced NPCs

The team utilized OpenAI's GPT-3 to make the NPCs respond to your phrases in real-time.

With the AI-boom continuing at an accelerating pace, seeping deeper and deeper into every aspect of our daily lives, an increasing number of game developers are incorporating the latest advances in artificial intelligence technology to enhance their projects and implement AI-boosted features into them.

One impressive example of AI's potential in gamedev comes from indie studio Rather Good Games, who recently showcased their use of OpenAI's GPT-3 to create AI-voiced non-playable characters (NPCs) in their Unity-powered MMORPG Anticthon, currently under development. In short demo videos shared by the team, Anticthon's NPCs were shown to be able to respond to the player's spoken phrases, analyzing them in real-time and providing an appropriate answer.

Additionally, these characters can adjust their behavior based on the player's responses. For example, if the player claims to be non-aggressive, uninterested in the NPC's possessions, or supports the same faction as the NPC, the characters may sheathe their weapons.
