Dark Souls Inspired Sky Children of the Light's Message System

That's the source for the game's unique text chat.

During the GDC 2024, Jenova Chen, the Creative Director behind Sky: Children of the Light, a peaceful, award-winning MMO from the creators of Journey, shared that its message system draws inspiration from the Dark Souls games.

According to Chen, in Sky, players can send direct messages to friends, and there's also a feature where players can leave folded paper message boats in the world for others to discover, a concept inspired by Dark Souls' soapstone messages. Unlike in Dark Souls where messages are constrained to a word bank, Sky allows players to freely type their messages.

However, to encourage positive interactions and deter trolling or other toxic behavior, the developer, thatgamecompany, decided to display to friends which messages were authored by each player.

"As soon as we announced that, we saw the community getting on and quickly deleting the shameful messages they'd made," Chen shared (via PC Gamer). "They were actively deleting their messages. That was really, really satisfying to see. We didn't know that was so effective. They really cared what their friends think about them."

As for now, it seems that Sky players are writing "happy birthday" messages, philosophical anecdotes, and heartfelt confessions that they may not say in person but express through the game, shared the Director.

Sky: Children of the Light is set to release on PC via Steam on April 11. You can add it to your wishlist to make sure not to miss it.
