GDCA Will Honor Roberta Williams with Pioneer Award

Game Developers Choice Awards will honor adventure game creator Roberta Williams for creating King’s Quest and founding Sierra On-Line.

King's Quest

During GDC 2020, Game Developers Choice Awards will recognize Roberta Williams for her input in the adventure game genre. Roberta worked in game development primarily in the 1980-1990s. Her portfolio includes major adventure titles of that period of time. King’s Quest, one of the titles she worked on, caused graphical breakthrough allowing for the game’s colorful avatar to move around objects on the screen, lending the title depth, and movement.

“Modern blockbuster titles now incorporate compelling stories as a matter of course, but those fundamental narrative elements were created anew by Roberta and her colleagues in the 1980s and her groundbreaking work helped establish what games could and should be. For that reason, we’re proud to recognize her ingenuity, creativity and hard work with the Pioneer Award”, said Katie Stern, general manager of the Game Developers Conference.

Press Release.

Roberta will be honored during the Game Developers Choice Awards ceremony on Wednesday, March 18th, 2020 at 6:30 pm at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the 2020 Game Developers Conference. All GDC 2020 pass-holders can attend the ceremony.
