How Dead Space's Story Was Re-Written for the Upcoming Remake

The devs behind the upcoming Dead Space remake discussed the minor changes to the original game's story and shared their approach to turning Isaac into a speaking character.

The Dead Space remake's release is not that far off and finally, we are getting more and more details about the upcoming horror. We already knew that the game will feature new sound effects and will add some interesting mechanics like the A.L.I.V.E. system which influences Isaac's breathing, heart rate, vocal exertion, and dialogue based on the gameplay features.

And now, developer EA Motive has shared some details on the game's story and particularly, what changes the studio has made to enhance players' experience.

In a new video released as part of IGN's coverage of the game, senior writer Jo Berry, environment artist Taylor Kingston, and art director Mike Yazijian discussed the minor changes the team has made to the game’s narratives including turning Isaac from a silent protagonist to a character that can talk, bringing some moments of the game earlier in the narrative, and changes to the fate of some characters.

The most noticeable change was certainly giving Isaac the ability to talk. According to the team, they approached this aspect quite carefully, taking into account the original games and how the character behaves in them.

"There was a lot of looking at Dead Space 2 and looking at key scenes. 'How does he react in this moment? What’s his sense of humor like? How does he react under pressure verbally?" Berry explained. "And it was just trying to get that personality correct. Trying to make sure that he feels like Isaac, he doesn’t feel like another character."

Another change to the game's narrative was the moment when the church of Unitology is introduced. According to the devs, it was decided to include the cult-like church in the characters' dialogues much earlier to make those discussions lay the groundwork for the church's "significant role later in the story."

One more change that the studio discussed is the fate of Chen who was "merely an NPC" that was killed in the original game's opening. The devs shared that in the remake, Chen becomes a more important character who serves as a personal connection between the crew and the Necromorph threat.
