Owlcat Games, a game studio known for developing Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, has recently faced harsh criticism over the job posting featuring "concept generation using AI."

Speaking of the controversial position, the studio was looking for a Concept Artist who, among other things, could create art using AI and was familiar with "generating concepts using advanced tools like neural networks and machine learning techniques such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and Dalle."

For now, Owlcat Games has already edited the job description, but you can find the screen with the previous information below. Anna Fedina, a Concept Artist from Blizzard, was one of the first who noticed the job and criticized the developer.

"Really wanted to work for Owlcat games back at the beginning of my career, I think I don't want anymore," wrote Anna Fedina, Concept Artist at Blizzard. "I think it's the first not-mobile art position I see that asks to use AI art generators."

Many artists have supported Fedina, expressing their opinions in the comment section. After the tweet went viral and gathered a pretty large amount of likes and comments, the studio has come forward with a statement.

The studio shared that they wanted to use AI only in the starting phase and had no plans to incorporate any generated art in the final release of the project.

"Guys, we would like to clarify this issue. We use AI as a working tool for our future project, which is in the early stages of production right now," wrote the studio on Twitter. "AI will be used exclusively for additional work with concepts and speeding up some internal processes (for example, for creative search, inspiration, or vision coordination before starting conceptualization itself)," they continued. "The final version of the game will not have any art generated by the neural networks. The same goes for the final concepts. Everything will be original and drawn by professional artists."

"On our current projects, Rogue Trader and Pathfinder, AI was not used at all. We are very sorry that we confused you with the information about AI in the job description. We understand that without further explanation this may be misinterpreted, so we have removed this information."

What do you think about the whole situation? Do you think that it's a big problem to use AI during the initial stages of development? You can share your opinion in the comment section below.

They are literally filling a job that many people have dedicated their lives to and gone to school for. To think a concept artists may have gotten laid off because of these unethical, talentless hacks trying to save the cost of hiring someone to do the job. A concept artists job is to actually make their game look original and not like some mashed up generic amalgamation. Considering how many layoffs the industry is facing right now they deserve to get dragged the this but above that they need an education in what they're actually saying. And whoever was responsible for this decision (and doubling down and making this statement) should not be working in this industry. At least until their mind is actually changed.
