Project OCTOPATH TRAVELER: 2.5 JRPG

Feast your eyes on this amazing new game from Square Enix, which combines sprites, ow-poly models and glorious lighting.

Somehow we’ve managed to miss, what looks like one of the most interesting JRPG projects, coming from Square Enix. The game was actually shown during the Nintendo Switch presentation, but we’ve just seen it actually.

Project: Octopath Traveler is being produced by Tomoya Asano, who worked on a bunch of games, including Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Bravely Second: End Layer, and both the Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV remakes on the Nintendo DS.

Asano is sort of the retro expert, who knows how to build really nostalgic experiences. To achieve this purpose he sort of mashed together beautiful 2d-sprites and low-poly 3d environments. It’s all done with the 2.5 perspective and looks absolutely stunning. I especially like how they’ve used the dynamic lighting here to highlight the background. Just beautiful.

Unfortunately, we have no idea, when the game will actually be released. It will be available for Switch, so there’s one more game I’ll need to buy.
