Half-Life Alyx Might Soon Be Played Without a VR Headset

A modder from Argentina is trying to port the new installment of Half-Life to a PC.

We all know about the Half-Life game series, one of the founding fathers of the FPS genre, one of the best games of its generation, etc. The third installment of the franchise was long-awaited by gamers all across the world. Because of this, it is no surprise that when Half-Life: Alyx was announced to be exclusively for VR, many fans of the franchise were disappointed.

Many people tried to port the game to PCs, but because of the absolutely different mechanics of VR games and PC games, the task modders face is truly a difficult one. One of these modders, who goes by the nickname SoMNst, shared some WiP videos of the No-VR mod SoMNst and the team are working on. From these videos, we can see who the mechanics and the gameplay, in general, are being ported to a PC. And the results are staggering, it really might be the best No-VR mod for Half-Life Alyx there is.

Currently, only two of the game’s 11 chapters can be played with the mod. SoMNst and two other modders, Optimus97 and Nicklaus, are working together to create no-VR-friendly versions of the game’s core functions, like crafting and main menu navigation. SoMNst says they’re prioritizing that, before working on making the rest of the game playable.
