Iconic Portals From Valve's Legendary Games Recreated in VR With Unity

Aurelio Puerta Martín unveiled a mind-blowing mixed reality experiment.

XR Developer and Interaction Designer Aurelio Puerta Martín has recently impressed hundreds of mixed reality enthusiasts and fans of Valve's legendary Portal games by showcasing the results of a mind-blowing experiment with the Meta Quest 3 VR/AR headset.

A huge fan of Portal games himself, Aurelio recreated the series' iconic blue-and-orange portals in virtual reality that look and act extremely similar to the in-game ones, letting the creator look through them and even teleport a digital companion cube from one point and space to the other.

According to the author, the demo was set up in Unity using XR Interaction Toolkit, the engine's component-based interaction system for creating VR and AR experiences, which provides a framework that makes 3D and UI interactions available from Unity input events.

The mesh of the rooms that is seen across the portals, Aurelio noted, was scanned using Metascan and then aligned in the app, while the author's own animated mesh was captured with Volograms' Volu app and rigged with Mixamo. Additionally, the creator utilized Tom Goethals' Portals for VR asset pack, available to download via the Unity Asset Store.
