Nine Sols: Sekiro & Hollow Knight-Inspired Taopunk Action-Platformer

The game features deflection-focused combat and immersive storytelling, all in a cyberpunk/Taoism setting.

Red Candle Games released a trailer for Nine Sols – a hand-drawn 2D action-platformer inspired by Sekiro, Hollow Knight, and Katana Zero. The game features deflection-focused combat, immersive storytelling, and a Taopunk world that mixes cyberpunk/sci-fi elements with Taoism and Far Eastern mythology.

Nine Sols tells the story of Yi, a hero from the past, who is awoken by a human child and proceeds to take revenge on 9 Sols – rulers of the New Kunlun realm.

The studio put a lot of emphasis on the combat system. You will be able to deflect attacks to avoid damage and absorb and accumulate Chi, which will help you "launch a stylish charging attack." Defecting attacks will also allow you to stick a Chi-filled talisman to reverse the damage.

The game will not be easy as the enemies are designed to test your skill to execute the correct move at the right moment. However, just like in Souls games, the developers promise that once you grasp the rhythm, "the experience can be both satisfying and rewarding."

Red Candle Games managed to get its first goal – NT$3 million, which is about $105 000. If the next goals are met, the studio will add a story mode, cutscenes, an alternative ending, hidden bosses, and more.

Before Nine Sols, Red Candle Games developed horror games Detention and Devotion. The latter, while well-received at first, soon was removed from stores because of a controversial Easter egg unfavorably referencing then-Chinese leader.

The game is planned to be released in 2023 on PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. Hopefully, Nine Sols will not meet its predecessor's fate, so back it here.
