Dead Space Remake Developers Shared How They Keep Atmosphere Intense

The tension system driving dynamic events is called Intensity Director.

Dead Space is a well-known sci-fi horror franchise, and to keep up with its reputation, the remake needs to be as scary as its predecessors or even more so. The developers behind the upcoming game have shared how they will "keep players on the edge of their seat" using a dynamic events system called Intensity Director.

Motive Studio worked hard to make the atmosphere as tense as possible: visuals, audio, and lighting are more dynamic in the remake. "By having more depth here, we’re able to have more control over the player’s feelings of stress and excitement," said Senior Game Director Eric Baptizat.

Baptizat calls Intensity Director "a way to control the stress level for the player, to be sure there’s always something happening. It lets us control the emotion and tension, and to always keep the player on their toes, to keep them careful."

The system has over 1,200 unique events, with audio or lighting changes, fog or steam, and enemy spawns combined in layers to create encounters that feel like hand-made situations. But after the event, the player is given a break so the game doesn't feel emotionally exhausting.

Intensity Director works so well that it scares the creators themselves, so expect your unique tense experience when Dead Space comes out on January 27, 2023, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
